Ocean Literacy & Ocean Decade
An Official UN Ocean Decade & Blue Thread Endorsed Project
A Global Network for Ocean Literacy in Action
Launched as a global initiative following the Ocean Literacy World Conference in Venice in June 2024, the Blue Thread recognizes and celebrates individuals, organizations, and businesses that actively promote the principles of the Venice Declaration for Ocean Literacy. The Blue Thread serves as a symbol of commitment to sustainable ocean stewardship, inclusive participation, and innovative approaches to solving ocean-related challenges.
This global network aims to connect those whose work is aligned with the principles of the Venice Declaration and fosters collaboration to amplify the impact of Ocean Literacy efforts around the world. By displaying the Blue Thread label, members showcase their dedication to environmental sustainability, ocean health, and fostering a deeper understanding of our vital connections to the marine world.
The Blue Thread is part of the SEA BEYOND project conducted by UNESCO-IOC together with Prada Group since 2019 to raise awareness of sustainability and ocean preservation.
What is the Blue Thread Network?
The Blue Thread Network connects individuals, organizations, and initiatives from around the world who are committed to bridging the gap between ocean science and society.
It emphasizes not only scientific knowledge but also emotional connection, cultural understanding, and active participation in ocean conservation. The “Blue Thread” symbolizes the interconnectedness of all life with the ocean — a single thread that ties humanity together in the shared responsibility of protecting our blue planet.
ODTIF in Ocean Literacy
ODTIF is honored to be officially accepted as a member of the Blue Thread Network.
The Blue Thread Network is a prestigious global initiative led by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and its Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), in partnership with the Prada Group. It was launched following the Venice Declaration to promote Ocean Literacy in Action worldwide.
ODTIF and the UN Ocean Decade
ODTIF is an official UN Ocean Decade & Blue Thread endorsed project (No. 141.9).
The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030) is a global framework to generate the ocean knowledge needed for "the science we need for the ocean we want." As an endorsed Decade project, ODTIF connects ocean scientists, engineers, educators, policymakers and artists, and weaves ocean data into stories, music and media that people can feel and share.
Through the annual ODTIF Festival, the Ocean Literacy Sound & Video International Exhibition, and collaborations such as 《DEAR OCEAN》, ODTIF contributes to the Decade's goal of a society that understands and values the ocean.
